Des Moines Iowa's utilities MidAmerican Energy and Mediacom are allowed to charge a 5% franchise fee.
I recently looked at my Mediacom bill and there franchise fee is crazy.
Based on what they are allowed to charge, would be bill times 5%, but they are charging on a $29.95 bill $2.50 for the franchise fee. My old bill was basic charges $59.36, franchise fee should have been $2.95 (5%) instead it was $3.17. I called and spoke to a csr, she said the computer calculates the fees and taxes and that she doesn't have any knowledge of how or why it would be wrong. I realize this is maybe pennies on the dollar, but when you are charging thousands of customers, that should be illegal.
