Avast antivirus sent me the opportunity for an upgrade at a discounted price ($19.99). I chose to upgrade, but my computer slowed way down and I was having trouble connecting to the Internet. I looked up the support number online and called. The fellow identified himself as an Avast tech and directed me to allow him remote access to my computer. He then led me to the Event Viewer and warned rather urgently that my computer was going to crash within a matter of days if I didn't get a qualified engineer to clean my system. He then, after scaring me so, requested my account number and kept telling me in harsh terms that he was trying to help me. I was then charged $129.89, paid to DRI-Avast, and was never switched to the engineer. I then called back the next day and was spoken to harshly again and the fellow that day told me that I had been scammed and that my computer was infected with viruses and that he would help me for a mere $120 additional. I hung up on him and still have not heard one word from Avast, although I have written them several times regarding this matter. I am disabled and live on a fixed income and cannot afford this hit. I just can't believe I fell for this.

  • Debbie - Microsoft did the same to me-first person was not a tech. Tech gave me a number to call if we got disconnected. I wasted 90min then line died in middle of 'service.' I then knew I had been had! Redialed got real tech-another 75min. Billed for two tech calls. Techs were contract company, not Microsoft employees. Loud complaint to my CC company. Paid only for second call. First call was a scam! Apparently used by other companies. Don't take it. Keep records.
