I thought that I was calling a local company with which I had done business in the past. My garage door would not open or close, and the serviceman who arrived during the scheduled time period instantly identified the problem as a broken spring. He had the replacement parts in his truck and told me that each spring (and I needed two) would cost $260.00.

The next day I realized that the receipt was not from my local company, and I called them to see if they could give me some idea of how the amount I had been charged measured up to their charges. The charge for labor ($120/hour) was the same, but the charge for parts (the two springs) was grossly inflated. My local company said that I should have paid @ $45 for each spring, not the $260 that I was charged. When I went on to say that the repairman had offered to replace the 8 rollers at a cost of $25 each, my local company rep was shocked and suggested that I call the Better Business Bureau. I'm not sure what good that will do, but I feel pretty dumb for first, calling the wrong number, and second, for paying such an exorbitant amount without double-checking.
