I received a call from a man (Indian or Asian accent) claiming to be from helptech247. He said they were representing Microsoft & had 'detected' a virus on my computer. When I started asking questions about how they got my name, address & phone number he got upset & started telling me if I didn't use his help now, I would be responsible for my computer ceasing to operate. I decided to play along & see what he wanted me to do. He claimed it would all be offline so nobody would have access to my computer but me. Then, after having me pull up a menu with a list of harmless errors, he told me what bad shape my computer was in & he was surprised it still worked. He then told me to open 'Run', type ammyy.com & hit Enter. I didn't, of course. I stalled as long as I could, asking him other questions & finally got him to give me the following information (which I'm sure is fake): his name was Patrick Sanders, tech ID 1375, working for HelpTech247 & his supervisor was Eric Dawson, callback number 1-800-395-0714 (which is the number listed on helptech247.com). He was calling from 757-152-2390 which is either a Skype number or is spoofed. When you call it, call cannot be completed. I finally hung up on him, then googled the information & found the identical scam reported on several websites. Beware of www.helptech247 - it may actually be them calling because when I called the 1-800 # with the intent to report somebody using their name in a scam, they told me Patrick Sanders had just left for the day, but his supervisor Eric Dawson was there. Or somebody is familiar with their employees & is using their names.
